What are the current immigration policies for Latinos in the US?

The United States has implemented various immigration policies that impact Latinos, including:

Temporary Protected Status (TPS)

Grants residence and work visas to nationals of designated countries affected by armed conflict, natural disasters or extraordinary conditions.

Countries currently designated for TPS include El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

Approximately 670,000 people are eligible for or receiving TPS, with the majority being from Latin America and the Caribbean.

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)

Prevents deportation of unauthorized immigrant youth who arrived in the US before 2007.

About 594,120 individuals are current DACA recipients, with the majority being from Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala.

DACA has faced legal challenges, and new applications are currently on hold.

Title 42 and Title 8

Title 42, a pandemic-era policy, allowed the US to block migrant entry due to public health concerns. It expired on May 11, 2023.

The US government has reverted to Title 8, which involves rapid deportations, fines and prison time for unauthorized border crossings.

Asylum Policies

The US government has introduced rules requiring asylum seekers to prove they’ve attempted to gain asylum in a third country or made an appointment through a US government mobile app.

Mexico has agreed to continue accepting asylum seekers from certain countries, including Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

Immigration Processing Centers

The US has announced plans to open new migrant processing centers in Colombia and Guatemala to assist asylum applicants.

Public Opinion

According to a Pew Research Center survey, 75% of US Hispanics view the recent increase in migrants at the border as a major problem or crisis.

Latinos are divided on the effectiveness of proposed policies, such as increasing deportations or expanding the border wall.
